Health is shaped by many things, but my work is focused on the relevance of social factors. In this vein, I have recently explored the intersection of genes and environments in shaping well-being, as well as the relationship between incarceration and the health of current and former inmates. Like other medical sociologists, I define "health" broadly and have explored outcomes as diverse as depression, disability, disease, and death.
