In addition to ongoing research activities, PARC is committed to training new investigators interested in aging-related research through its affiliation with the Graduate Group in Demography, graduate groups in Sociology and Economics, and through the Get Experience in Aging Research Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) program (which supports undergraduate students through a 15-month immersive mentored research experience in Penn’s broad community of aging-related health care researchers).
PARC provides a stimulating environment for new investigators interested in the demography and economics of aging, health, and health care. PARC and the Population Studies Center at Penn bring together a distinguished faculty from the Departments of Sociology and Economics, the Wharton Business School, the School of Nursing, and the Perelman School of Medicine. GEAR UP allows undergraduates to grow their research skills, enrich their network of mentors and colleagues, and become more deeply involved in research that addresses the nation’s aging-related biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. The program includes formal and informal activities and incorporates online components during the academic year to accommodate students outside of Philadelphia.
The GEAR UP program, funded by the National Institute on Aging and is a joint venture between the Population Aging Research Center (PARC) and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (Penn LDI), builds on the successful and long-standing Summer Undergraduate Mentored Research (SUMR) Program, by providing exciting mentored research experiences to undergraduates for two consecutive summers, supplemented with programming throughout the academic year.
